Frozen Frogs?! The Wildest Winter Superpower in Nature

Some frogs, like the wood frog, have one of the most advanced survival strategies in the animal kingdom. During winter, they allow their bodies to freeze up to 70%, causing their heart, lungs, and muscles to stop functioning.
Instead of dying, these frogs protect themselves using a natural glucose-based antifreeze that prevents ice from damaging their cells. Ice forms around their organs — but never inside their cells, which is the key to staying alive.

When temperatures warm in spring, the frog thaws, its organs restart, and normal activity resumes within hours. Scientists study frozen frogs to better understand cell protection, freezing biology, and how life adapts to extreme environments.
